Cost of living in Dubai – Calculate online

One of the most frequently asked questions by future expatriate is “How much money do I need to live in Dubai?”. I have spent some time to make up a Dubai living cost calculator that would help you to decide whether your offer is good or not.

Prices here are based on statistics from Dubai’s property & car listing websites. Other costs such as utilities and food are coming from my own and my friends and colleagues’ experience. The page is printer-friendly, it means once you get the amount of money you must have to live in Dubai, just print the page like you would normally do. The header, menus and other stuff will go away.

If you find this useful, I would appreciate if you help other future Dubai expats by putting a link to this page on your blog or your favorite forum.

So, here you go. Just select the options and get the numbers in your currency.

Prices are as of: 21st of December.

Please choose your currency:

1. Housing

How many bedrooms do you need?

What kind of housing/location do you prefer?

Read more about locations in Housing in Dubai article.

Keep in mind that the housing prices on this page are market averages for the typical locations according to one of the most popular classifieds website. The prices may slightly vary throughout Dubai though.

Cheap

No ameneties, potentially in the middle of the desert. Based on an average price in International City

3000 AED / month
24000 AED / year

Fair

Pool in the building, parking, good location. Based on an average price in Dubai Marina

3000 AED / month
24000 AED / year

‘Expat’

All amenities, “expat” location. Based on an average price in Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR)

3000 AED / month
24000 AED / year

Villa

All amenities, good location. Based on an average price in Jumeirah. Min 2 bedrooms.

3000 AED / month
24000 AED / year

2. Transportation

The reality is that you cannot really live without a car here as there is almost no convenient transport infrastructure except for taxi (costs quite some money btw).

Transportation costs are given on an assumption you only have one car in the family and you buy it taking a loan in a bank for 5 years with no downpayment. So, basically the monthly prices is your future installment + 5% car price/year for insurance.

Car prices are estimates for a 1 year old car with low miliage, dealer’s warranty, driven by an expat.

If you don’t want to buy a car, consider renting one. The rent price for a Toyota Yaris will be around 1700 AED / month.

What class of car do you want to drive?

3. Living cost

Rougly this money should be enough for you to buy groceries, meat, vegetables, fruit, fresh juices and other good quality products. It will also be enough for eating in a cafe once a week.

I bet you want to know how much money you need to have a beer or two in a pub. That’s very straightforward. Average beer price is 30 AED for 0.5l. Now use your brain or a calculator :)

Hi! The information is very useful.
Btw, couldn’t find anything about schooling here. How much would it be?
    Cheers

      Richard,
I am now working on getting education quotes in.
I haven’t got any kids myself, so don’t know how much it costs by heart. Going to check how much my colleagues pay.
      Kind regards,

    Hello

Just a brief idea regarding school / university expenses. For School we may take roughly AED 1500 minimum per child and for University it should be around AED 3500 in midium category.

Hope this will help to move ahead.

    Regards.

Thank you for putting this site together..I have found the information valuable. However your housing calculations seem quite low and wouldn’t apply to areas outside of JBR. We’ve been on a house-hunting trip for a week and have seen 27 apartments in a variety of areas and have found that 3 bedroom apartments for less than AED 200,000 are unacceptable: cheap finish-out, small/cramp, no storage, some have windows that don’t open, etc, particularly in the JBR district. Our agent and relocation specialist don’t recommend JBR for the reasons listed above (mainly for substandard finish-out and design). The apartments in JBR seem to be less expensive than Dubai Marina or Old Town areas, and there appears to be more availability in JBR than these other areas … this is great if one wants to live in JBR and don’t mind trading substandard quality for proximity to the sea. For example, you can get a huge 5000 square foot penthouse in JBR for AED 250,000 today, but the quality of the apartment is quite bad. The same size place would be AED 500,000 to 1,000,000 in other areas if you could find one that large. I certainly mean no offense and I’m happy for you that you love your JBR living. I thought it was important to mention that it isn’t the same throughout Dubai. Could you please let us know where you got your housing cost data? I’d be very interested to know since we’re tyring to negotiate with the company ;-) .
    Kind Regards,
    Kim

    • admin says:

      Kim,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have added a comment above the housing section to make it clearer.

I used dubizzle.com classified website to get the average numbers. I didn’t consider the floor, building, etc. It is only a market average according to one of the most popular Dubai classified website, which should provide the wanna-be expats with a bigger picture.

Keep in mind, that all prices in Dubai are negotiable, especially now. So that, the prices I got from dubizzle may in fact be lower than they are. I didn’t consider fancy penthouses though as most of the expats will not live in such apartments.

I agree with you that finishing in JBR may not be as good as it could be. My colleagues confirmed that as well. However, the finishing in Bahar and Rimal towers seems to be quite alright (I live in Bahar, two friends live in Rimal and we three are quite happy with the apartments). However, it may be quite inconsistent and every single appartment has to be looked at.

      Kind regards,
      Ilya

    Dear Friend,
The inputs on this website is extremely good. I’ am 24 years old and got a job in BUR DUBAI for AED 3000. It is an administration clerk profile. Company promised me the shared batchelor accomodation and the rest including the food, transportation, etc at my cost. I don’t have any habit of drinking, smoking, etc and doesn’t have any intention to go for it. I’ am pure veg and not even habitual to drinking coffee, tea, milk, etc. How much i’ll be in a position to save and what could be my maximum expenditure per month. I would like to save atleast INR 20,000 a month. Is it possible…??

    With Thanks & Regards,
    CHANDRU

    • admin says:

Chandru, I think you will be able to save at least 2000 AED a month. You may check how much it is in your currency on google.

  7. Mr Whyte says:

I don’t suppose you know the -/+ in cost in Sharjah? I’ve heard a rental for 18,000 AED P.A is totally possible.

Have to say… the only easy to read site i’ve found online so far.

    • admin says:

Thanks for your comment. No idea on the cost of living in Sharjah, but I’ve heard that Sharjah is definitely cheaper than Dubai. Strange enough, local property websites mostly focus on Dubai.

  8. Alexandru says:

First of all I would to thank you for your valuable work.
I have an offer of 7000 AED per month (plus health insurance and return air ticket once a year) for a Business Executive position in Dubai. Company is not providing accommodation. I want to move with my wife having no kids. Also I live a simple life without drink and smoke.
Is it possible to live a decent life with this package with a target saving of at least 1500 AED per month or should I negotiate for more?
Kindly help me in this regard.

    Thanking you in advance

    • admin says:

Hi Champak. Without accommodation it may be rather difficult. Negotiate for more or accommodation if you can.

    • admin says:

I think it will very much depend on the schooling. You will not need too much money for food and buying a car. You need to understand what kind of school you want your kids to attend and check the prices with them.

  11. Arshad says:

    Dear Lllya,

Good to see your instant replys to all quierys & happy faces wit satisfied answers :)

Well i will be joining in media city with pkg of 12000aed

i got recently married please let me know the procedure for getting my wife in freezone visa

looking forward to hear form you

    thanks & regards
    Arshad

    • admin says:

If you are in Media city, I would advise you to look in Dubai Marina and The Greens as they are very close to your work. Check the prices though. If you want something cheaper than check Al Quoz – the area is not an “expat” one but it costs much less and it is still close to your work.
It will be difficult for you without a car because there is no active metro station close to Media City. Better try to get your license to feel free in this country.

  12. king says:

i have been offered ctc of 15500 uaed all inclusive in dubai
    is this a good salary

    • admin says:

Yes this is a good offer. You will not be able to buy a Bentley, or live in a big villa but you will definitely be able to find a neat apartment and even save some money.

  13. Deep says:

    Hi,

Congrats for creating such an useful site. I have been trying to get some recent cost of living figures and it has been difficult to find a reliable site.

The house rental figure that you provide here still seems to be on the lower side but may be that is because other sites have not been updated after the recent price fall.

I got an offer of around 20K pm as Financial Analyst with Single Residency Visa.

    Is it a decent offer?

Congrats once more for your brilliant effort.

    Regards.

    • admin says:

Yes that’s quite a decent offer. Though if you don’t get a housing allowance on top of your salary, it is simply good :)

  14. Taz says:

Would you be able to advise on the following:

I am Brit who is relocating to Dubai with a new role / employer. We are still negotiating the contract however we have a sticking point over the salary calculation!!

My new employer wants to set an annual amount in AED at a rate of £1 = 5.5 AED. As the AED currency rate had fluctuated so much over the last year due you, in your experience, think this is ‘fair’? Should the rate be higher / lower? Should my salary be linked to the US$?.

    Many Thanks,

    • admin says:

It would better be linked to the US dollar as the rate is fixed at $1 = 3.66 AED

  15. Suraj says:

    Hi,

Thanks for the info. I am in the process of negotiating with a UK based company in Dubai as an expat. I’ve been offered $35000 per year which is around $130,000 (1USD = 3.67AED). The company is also providing housing and car and a paid trip to my country of residence. Few questions: Do you know if companies in Dubai offer a relocation package and if yes, how much does it range? How good/bad is the medical system of Dubai? Here in the US, if you do not have insurance, you would be ripped by the medical bills. And what should be the average commuting distance if you work in Dubai. The reason I ask this is because some distances might be only 15 mins during normal hrs but could well be 2 hrs in peak traffic.

Very glad you came up with this. This is very helpful for someone who is new to the region. Thanks.

    • Suraj says:

      Sorry, my bad. I meant USD35000 ~ AED 130,000.

    • admin says:

I am not aware what normal practices of providing relocation packages are here. My company shipped all my stuff down here, and also gave me a cheque amounting to 1 monthly salary as my relocation allowance.
Medical system will be ripping you if you don’t get a medical insurance. Just for instance, my medical insurance wasn’t ready when I moved here, and my wife required some urgent treatment. We paid 7000 AED for 2 visits to a doctor, 1 MRI scan and a few tests. But I believe you will be provided with an insurance plan by your employer.
If your work will be in Deira or Bur Dubai, you may end up spending half a day in a traffic jam. Tell me where you are supposed to work, and I will try to assess the situation out there. I spend 45 minutes driving 45 kilometers. No traffic jams. But as I said, it depends.

  16. Taz says:

    Hi All,

I am Brit who is relocating to Dubai with a new role / employer.

We are still negotiating the contract however we have a sticking point over the salary calculation!!

My new employer wants to set an annual amount in AED at a rate of GBP £1 = 5.5 AED. As the AED currency rate had fluctuated so much over the last year, do you, in your experience, think this is a ‘fair’ rate? Should the rate be higher / lower?

    I have a couple of follow-on questions also…

    1. The company are providing 12 weeks of fully paid-for accommodation at the start of my new role / move to Dubai. How does 12 weeks compare with the current norms being offered pls?

    2. Instead of the 12 weeks I am thinking of asking for 2 weeks of paid-for accommodation and taking 10 weeks of cash and finding my own place (as (1)I think I could use the money more efficiently and (2) I would enjoy a place a picked for myself more than a corprate apartment.

    * How realistic is it to find and secure (contracts, etc) a 2 bd apartment or villa in 2 weeks of movoing to Dubai?
    * How much money per week would be appropriate to ask for for each of those 10 weeks (i.e. average weekly rent for a 2 bd apartment / villa)?

    3. I am being offered 36,500 AED as an annual car allowance. How good / generous is this in your experience pls (i.e. what does it get you ((does that include insurance and running costs))??

    4. My monthly salary will be at least 60,000 AED. Are you able to provide a broad / general idea of how much money I could put away in savings each month whilst still allowing me to have a ‘good’ quality of life (nice home / drinks / dinners / holidays, etc)?

I appreciate any help you can provide.

    Many Thanks,

    Taz

    • admin says:

Hi Taz, thanks for coming back.
      1) Everybody in the company I am working for (a top-100 international brand) is being given 1 month. That’s more than enough.
      2) Take a month. It should be enough to find a place. 2 weeks is too little. You should not underestimate the local specific. Sometimes people don’t do what they promise. 1 month will do. Check how much your employer is going to pay for the accommodation and divide it by 12 :)
      3) Your car allowance is quite good. E.g. I pay 2145 AED / month for my 2008 fully loaded Ford Mustang that I bought a year ago. All maintenance fees are covered by the dealership as the part of the deal the previous owner had with them, and the fuel is paid by the company, so the only run-cost I have is the paid roads and the insurance (6k AED/ year). The cheapest rent-a-car will cost you 1700 AED / month with all run-cost excluding the fuel included.
      4) Your salary is a pretty high one. Depending on how often you are planning to travel, but you will be able to save at least (the very least!) 30k AED.
      Cheers, Ilya

    health benefits
airfare to and from home city
airfare once a year home if I stay for 2 years

I live fairly modestly ( don’t drink and party ),

    Hi,
You are really great and the information provided is indeed valuable for new expats.
I have an opprtunity on a senior level at Dubai and I am going to meet them for final salary negotiations.
Initially they have offered 20,000 AED/month + Accomodation and other basic benefits.
I am working in India and getting around 2 Million INR annually.
What do you suggest, should I accept the offer or need to push for more?

    Regards,
    TS

    • admin says:

Your offer is quite good. Whether you are going to accept it or not is your decision, you need to check all pro-s and contra-s. I would think living here will be a bit more expensive than living in India, so you need to also consider this difference.

  19. Ray says:

It seems cost of living is pretty high in Dubai.

  20. Zeko says:

Thanks alot for the usefull ifo that u collect here.

i’ve offered 65K house allowance yearly i heard i’ll not find good place with this mony

    thanks again

    • admin says:

Unfortunately living in Sharjah, you will be stuck in traffic jams. I would try to look for an apartment in Bur Dubai itself or places like International City or Al Warqaa. You can also try Downtown Burj Dubai area.

2.) I cant speak Arabic. I would like to learn Business Arabic, can you refer a good tutor that will be able to tutor me at my office in Deira? and at what price?

    Regards,

    Mr M

    • admin says:

      Thank you
      1) I do not know much about business loans but generally there isn’t too much difference whether you are an expat or not.
      2) Try Berlitz school. I heard they were quite good. They are located in Jumeirah, 15 minutes drive from Deira.

Please let me know what you think??

      Hi Christine,
It depends on what you are used to. I have friends, a family of 2, living on about the same amount. They live in a studio in International City, have got a car but can’t save anything. It is manageable yet you might have some struggle.

    Inputs will be helpful.

    Joe.

    • admin says:

Hi. Well, you are right the offer isn’t a decent one. It depends on what you are used to but 4500 will be hardly enough for a middle-class apartment alone.

      • A.Youssef says:

Then, I’ll need to think again. anyways your website is awesome and very helpfull.

If I decide not to take company accomodation, will I be able to make a living there?

    • admin says:

Hi, John. 322-588k AED a year sounds very good. Keep in mind that everything except apartments rent and alcoholic drinks is cheaper in Dubai than in Europe.

  32. Lisa says:

    Hello,
first of all really congrats to the site! It is comforting to see that I am not the only one a bit “confused” about what cost of living really is in Dubai…
    Here are my questions:
I am offered AED 30k per month plus travel allowance (which would be enough for tickets to travel home about 4 times per year!) plus health insurance.
I do like a comfortable lifestyle (nice 1br apartment with view), nice dinners, travel, etc., but nothing too crazy.
What do you think…is this a good offer if I consider:
    1. staying in Dubai for long
    2. staying for 1-2 years just to build up some savings?

I have read in one of the comments that you recommend 1 month time to find an apartment..does it really take so long? I was more hoping for 1 week…

    Thank you!!

    • admin says:

Hi Lisa, thanks for stopping by. 30k per month sounds a reasonable offer, which will let you live a comfortable life and probably even save some money (depending on your lifestyle!). It is an OK offer for both options. After a couple of months in Dubai you will see whether you would like to stay for long or you just want to save some cash and get out of here.

1 week may not be enough as
      1) you will have to get your residence visa first
      2) you will need to find a place, and this may not be that quick
      3) the landlord will need some time to clean the apartment
      4) people are not very quick in Dubai :)

I spent a month trying to find a place in Dubai, although some people managed to find a place in 2 weeks. I would consider month a safe period for securing a permanent place to live.

  33. Lisa says:

    Hello,
first of all great job on this website! It is great source and it is nice to see that I am not the only one to be unsure about the real costs of living in Dubai…

I have a few questions and am curious about your opinion:

I am offered an AED 30k per month job, plus ticket money (enough to travel home about 4 times a year!), plus health insurance.
I do like a comfortable lifestyle, incl. a nice 1br apartment in a good area, nice dinners, traveling, etc.
(I calculated that I could save somewhere between AED 12k – 18k per month..is that realistic?)

In one of the posts I read that you recommend 1 month for finding the right apartment…do I really need so long? I was hoping to get it done in a week or so…what do you think? Would you recommend one of the online RE agents? Or rather classifieds?

    Thanks so much!
    :)

    • admin says:

See my reply to your previous comment. To find a good place consider working with a professional agent. Better Homes is one of the leading agencies. You may also try http://www.dubizzle.com for classifieds. It is better to use agents anyway as this will make your life easier.

  34. Atif says:

first of all a good site – congrats.

still have a couple of questions. about to receive an offer of Gross Salary 25K to 28K AED – will it be sufficient for a family of 4 (2 adult & 2 minor) keeping in view the following criteria?

    - need a 1/2 bedroom flat in a reasonable place with driver’s annexe in Dubai.
    - ONE TIME COST: how much does it take to furnish the same with basic household items including cutlery, crockery, electrical applicances (TV, Fridge) and etc?
    - what could be the fee for kindergarten for a child?
    - do not have an international licence. is it possible to have a full time driver and what could be the cost?

    • admin says:

Hi Atif. The salary is ok and should be enough. Not sure about a driver as I and everyone who I know drive themselves.
To furnish a 1-2 bedroom apartment, you will need at 20+ thousand AED depending on the furniture quality. Furniture is quite expensive in Dubai.
Kindergarten fee – no idea as I haven’t got kids.

  36. Paritosh says:

    Hi,

I have been offered 8250 AED/month salary package (+medical insurance+one month extra salary with air ticket to & fro home) by ITPeopleGulf and will be deputed in Emirates Airline on software engineer (@3.5Yrs Exp) position.

Please suggest whether this amount is enough to live good life in dubai.
Tell me if I get married, my salary will be enough or not.

    • admin says:

Hi Paritosh. You may want to check whether your company will provide you accommodation. “Good life” has a different meaning for everyone. A good 1 bedroom apartment will cost at least 5-6k a month. So, you should really think about the accommodation.

  37. Arturo Gaytan says:

    Hello,

I find your page soo useful, thanks. I have a proposal for a Managing Position with private company, my salary will be 22 500 AED, Do you think it’s ok?

I’m married with one baby and I hope have one more.

    Thanks and Regards

    • admin says:

Hi Arturo. Yes I think your salary sounds quite fair and you will able to live a good life in Dubai!

  38. AMAR says:

    HI,

I AM CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT FROM INDIA WITH APPROX 18 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL HOW MUCH WOULD I GET FOR AN GENERAL MANAGER ACCOUNTS POSITION?

Hi Amar, accounting is not my area of expertise. You may want to check one of Dubai classifieds websites like dubizzle.com.

  39. Thaly says:

Hello, I I have been offered a salary of 12000 AED per month in a TV in Dubai media City. I will have to look for my own accomodation and other expenses … All they offer is a medical insurance and 3000 AED as plane ticket.
I am Lebanese and I will need to send to Lebanon around 1000 USD per month to my family and to save another 500 USD for myself…. Do u think its worth accepting the offer ?

    Thanks a lot

    • admin says:

Hi Thaly, I think it is doable if you get a studio apartment in a place like International City or Bur Dubai for about 2500-3000 AED. You will not need too much money to live and you can save 1500 USD as you need.

  40. Arnie says:

    Hi,
Let me first thank you for putting this together. Your site helped me a lot on deciding if I should accept an offer or not. I am still in the process of mulling it over but I would certainly appreciate if if you could answer some decision questions:
    1. Specialist job Offer of AED15K/month inclusive of accom and transpo? Is this a decent job offer? If I am not happy, is it possible to negotiate?
    2. No mention of medical insurance. Is it part of standard package?
    3. I have a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids), will the salary package be enough if I rent a 2 bedroom studio?
    4. Can my wife work there? Is work easy to find in view of the economic crisis?

Thanks so much. Great work. Keep it up!!!

    • admin says:

Hi Arnie, glad the information helped you.
      1. The offer sounds rather fair for a specialist position (even for managerial in some companies). You can always try to negotiate of course. Make sure ALL conditions are written down as some people do not follow their mouth here.
      2. Not by the law. It must be in your contract. I didn’t mention it as it was in my contract. No idea of the cost.
      3. It will depend on the location. You may not be able to leave in so called ‘expat’ areas. But it is possible. However, if you’ve got 3 kids, check with your employer if they will pay for schooling. It may get very expensive in Dubai.
      4. With a dependent residence visa (issued by default) your wife won’t be able to work. Once she finds a job, her visa can be converted into a work permit. It is quite difficult to find a job in Dubai at this time. However, if she’s got a good degree and not too ambitious about the salary, she can find something.

      • Arnei says:

Thanks for the thoughtful answers. Just to give you an update:

        1. Yes, I was able to negotiate my salary and they have increased the offer to 19K AED/month- all in.
        2. Yes, there is a medical insurance package but I do not know the details. I will have to get back to the employers for this.

My offer is from the muncipal government. Is it stable to be employed by government based on your experience.

Many thanks and more power. Cheers!

        • admin says:

          Hi Arnei,
          Excellent news! Congratulations!
Governmental jobs are normally very stable! Most of the employers are locals, so you may need to get used to interacting with a different culture. Not sure where you are from by the way.

  43. Alfred says:

    Hi,

I have a short question, it would be great, if you could help me with this. I do not have a job offer currently, but I am moving to Dubai for private reasons.
How is the job market doing currently? How easy/hard is it right now to get a job with an advanced degree and 5 years management consultancy experience? Do you have any suggestions on good recruiters or maybe companies that are hiring these days? (Is it easier to look for a job in Dubai, or is the internet the best way to look for any vacancies?)
Thank you for your help in advance!

    • admin says:

      Hi Alfred,
With your experience I would try to get to the major consulting firms like McKinsey, Bain or BCG directly. Job market is very tough but people with good experience are always appreciated. The job market as a whole isn’t good at the moment.

  44. Rishi says:

    Hi,

I have been offered a job there in Dubai for AED 12K per month (exclusive of accomodation).

So, is it good to go with this offer and can i save too after spending on my accomodation, food and traveling (up -down from office).

I am a bachelor, preferring both veg and non-veg, non-smoker, non-drinker, 28 years of age from India (New Delhi).

    Please advice.. Best Regards, Rishi

    • admin says:

      Hi Rishi,
You will be able to save some money. The exact amount will depend on the accommodation that you choose as this is the most expensive thing in Dubai.

I have been offered 20000AED nett pay.(no other perks ,even flight cost they say ..under this package)
Need to stay as family with two kids.
    Studio apartment,school,car,living expenses
all this cost together how much roughly?
    No lavish spendings…no drinking…no smoking…
can i demand more in engineering design line?
Is it wise to demand at this period?
what other ways/expenditure talks i can use to negotiate with them to raise the pay?
can i straightly ask for 24k and strike the deal?Confused..
    Thanks in advance.
    Rajj.

    • admin says:

      Hi Rajj,
      Sorry for the late response.
You can check apartment and car costs above using the calculator or check a classified website like dubizzle.com
20k AED is a pretty good salary, the market isn’t great right now, but you can always ask for more. Make sure that all work conditions that you discuss are fixed in the contract. Local employers often don’t follow the mouth in Dubai.

    Hi,
While searching the internet I came across your site. First of all congrats in doing the wonderful job. It is very helpful for people like me to decide on whether to accept a job in Dubai or not.
Now let me come to the point. I have recently got a Job in Dubai for AED 10000 / month. I am a family of two. As of now only I will be relocating to Dubai. My company will also provide me family visa and insurance, along with one way annual flight fare.
    1. Do you think the salary will be sufficient enough for two of us?
    2. My wife is having 4 years experience in SAP ABAP programming. How are her job prospects in Dubai? How much would be the average salary she can expect for her field of experience?

    Thomas

    • admin says:

      Hi Thomas,
      1. Is accommodation cost included in 10k?
      2. SAP experience should be valuable in Dubai. Not sure about salaries though.

  49. Arturo Gaytan says:

For my job, I’ve to use skype to keep in touch with my clients and boss in France, skype is my basic work tool, I hearded that it’s prohibited in UAE, is it possible to use it? there are other tools permitted as skype? the cost of international calls is expensive? what choices are?

Thanks so much, this is my ultimate doubt that I have to move into Dubai

    Regards and Saludos!!

    • admin says:

      Hi Arturo,
You can use skype for skype-to-skype calls. Skype-to-landline/mobile calls are blocked in UAE but there are a few workarounds via virtual private networks to by-pass this.

  52. Kunal Kalia says:

    Hi there,

I’ve taken up a job offer in Dubai for AED 4000/ Month plus incentives, with a Bank. My uncle is buying a flat for me in Discovery Gardens and my work place is in Jumeirah Lake Palace, which I guess is not too far from the flat.

I just wanted to know if after paying the utility bills, transport via metro, food, braodband, mobile bills, will I be able to save up some money?

Thanks for putting up such a great site.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

    • admin says:

      Hi,
Given that you have accommodation, you should be able to save about 2000 if you don’t go out too often.

      • Kunal Kalia says:

Thanks a lot. such a relief to hear that! happy savings :D take care

  53. Ali says:

    Hi
First of all thanks for this blog. I am currently in discussion for a job in Dubia, Company is offering Accomdation & Travel For Me(currently Bachelor) and also family accomdation on marriage.
My current job is in Riyadh and i am able to save 8000AED
My Question is how much should i ask them so i can save about 13000AED.
I don’t smoke, drink, not a regular traveler, What is the other cost of living there? Is 1000 to 1500AED good enough for other expenses(other than accomdation & travel). Will a salary of 15000AED enough to save 13000AED (providing accomdation & travel)?

    • admin says:

      Hi Ali,
Well, we spend about 1000-1500 for food. So you should be alright to live on 2000 if you are a bachelor and don’t go out too often.

  54. Jonnie says:

    Hi,

Fantastic site! It has helped me a lot to get things into perspective.

I have been offered a manager position with a salary package of just under AED 21K/month. Breakup is as follows:
    - housing = approx AED 6k/month
    - Utility/transport allow = approx AED 1K

In addition to the above, annual air ticket and medical is provided.

    My question is:
    1. Is this a decent salary for a manager (I am single so no family to take care of)?
    2. Would 6K be sufficient to get a decent 1 bedroom apt in the “expat” area (in JBR or somewhere walking distance to the Marina Walk)?
    3. Would 14K be sufficient as a salary for other expenses (food, entertainment/partying/eating out, car, fuel etc), and most importantly how much would i be able to save per month out of this?

    Thanks
    Jonnie

    • admin says:

      Hi Jonnie,
      1. It is indeed a good salary for a manager even for a multinational company.
      2. Being perfectly honest, I don’t think you will get a place in JBR but you will definitely find a neat apartment in Marina for your budget.
      3. Absolutely sufficient. If you don’t drink too much (this is damn expensive in Dubai!), you will be able to save about 8-10k depending on your lifestyle.

  55. Medy says:

I am getting a job in dubai for a salary of roughly 70000 us dollars.tell me what kind of a life do i get.i have a wife and a nine year old daughter

    • admin says:

      Hi Suman,
With 70,000 USD / year you will be able to live quite a comfortable life – nice apartment (not that luxurious though), good car, going out, etc. It is a good offer.

  57. Michael says:

    Hi there,

Apologies to add to the growing list of questions! I’ve been offered a job in Dubai on a monthly salary of 15,000. Being as the point of me coming over is to save as much money as i can and then repatriate it, is this enough to live on (small apartment, cheap car etc…) and still save a fair amount? I’m pretty used to cheap living in the UK so i know how to budget, and i don’t want to tie myself into a move and find i’m hardly saving any money.

Thanks for all your help – great site by the way – useful to thousands!

    Cheers

    Michael

    • admin says:

      Hi Michael,
You will be able to save at least 6-7 thousand living a pretty comfortable life. If you live in one of the remote areas like International City, you might save even more.

      • Michael says:

Thanks for that – sorry just to clarify though, is that 6-7 thousand english pounds, or dhs a month? I’m pretty good at being frugal, don’t drink much and I’m single, so i’ll be keeping costs as low as i can!

Cheers for all your help – it’s invaluable for so many people!

        Michael

        • admin says:

I meant 6-7 thousand AED provided your 15 thousand were also in AED… Sorry for the confusion.

        • admin says:

Michael, as you can see there are no ads on this website. I don’t earn any money with it. When I moved to Dubai I couldn’t find any information. That’s why I made it up…

          • Michael says:

Well you’re an absolute legend – if i make it out there i owe you some beers!

            Thank you for your help

  58. Debbie says:

    Hi,

My husband has been offered a job for USD10,500 per month + insurances and trip for family back home. This is broken down to include USD2000 for housing and USD500 for car the rest USD8000 is salary for a total of USD10,500. We are a family of 4 with a baby on the way – so 5 all together. Is this wage sufficient for us considering that the new one will not start school for another five years? Can we live a comfortable middleclass life on this wage?

We are thinking of settling in Mirdif. Is this a good area?

Also, what are the Catholic Schools available? Is it mandatory that at private schools that kids have to learn Islam?

    Thanking you in advance,
    Debbie

    • admin says:

      Hi Debbie,
This salary is quite good, so you should be feeling comfortable, I wouldn’t be worried too much. However, it would be great if your 2 elder kids’ schooling was paid by the employer, this is a common practice for expats working for multinationals and would save you some money.
Mirdif is a good area for a family living and it is also not expensive and should fit your budget.
I am not sure about Catholic schools but I would have thought that international schools should respect the students’ religion and should not force to study Islam.

  60. Vanessa says:

    hi!

first I must add my thanks to all the others for what is an invaluable web-site in terms of getting info prior to moving out to Dubai. I feel guilty asking another individual question as you’ve responded to so many, but am still trying to get my head around the finance side of things.
i’ve been offered 8600/month including accom, flights, medical card and a monthly allowance of 335 for transport; am I likely to be able to find transport for this and is the norm to have to put down a larger amount up-front rather than pay on monthly basis?

Given that my only real costs will be transport and food/drink, do you have any idea how much it’s realistic to expect to be able to save? Would 7000 UAED be realistic?
    Many thanks,

    Vanessa

    • admin says:

Hi Vanessa. If you live a modest live, I would say it is realistic.
An inexpensive second hand car will cost you at least 5-7k. You can buy it for cash or put as much money up-front as you would like.

  61. Chenko says:

    Great site – thanks.
2 adults + 3 kids (Primary age), What salary (AED) do you need to live comfortable normal family life in decent area – probably expat? How long does it take to commute to Duabi Mall area from, say, Mirdiff?

    • admin says:

Hi Chenko, it depends on what comfortable is for you. I would say at least 15-20k + housing, car, schooling, insurance and air tickets provided by the company.
Mirdiff to Dubai Mall journey will take you about 20-25 minutes.

And my queries are: 1)Do you think this is enough time to get a decent job? 2)How much on an average will cost on daily expenses (food, travelling, etc)for 3 weeks? Thanking you in advance, awaiting your revert.

  69. Lawrence says:

    Hi Ilya,

I’ve been offered a job in Dubai, with a salary of 14,000 AED/mth. The employer said this is all inclusive i.e accommodation transportation, etc.. Not quite sure what the ‘etc’ includes – have not talked details with him yet.

It will be just me and my wife – no children. Right now we live in Canada/Ontario and we have a relatively higher standard of living. I was wondering if the salary mentioned above would be enough to keep the standard and, of course, to save some money too. We don’t go out to restaurants that often and do not drink excessively either (well, a beer is always welcome, of course).

From your experience, how much could we save, based on the information provided? – well, I understand that this is not a precise science and depends on a lot of factors. Also, is that salary a good salary for somebody with +20 yrs of experience in automotive? I have an university degree, in case that matters.

Many thanks for all your work – this is by far the best site for those searching for information regarding relocation to Dubai.

    Yours,
    Lawrence

Is it saner to live in Sharjah / Somewhere else and commute to Dubai ?

I need some help in making my decision.

Hi, my wife has been offered 25,000aed a month for a job in Al Ain. We also get accomodation, utilities, a free flight home for both of us (to U.K.), medical insurance. We would be sending 5200aed home a month to cover uk mortgage.
Is this enough to live comfortably and save a lot?

p.s. good website, well done :-)

Hello, Have had one brief talk with a potential employer re teaching in Dubai. Was told would be paid £1,300 per month which includes a housing allowance. Used a currency converter and worked this out to be 6,951 UEA. From what I have read this may not sound fantastic but as yet have not enquired about health insurance, re-location costs, visas and utilities etc. Do you think it unreasonable to expect some or all of these to be paid by the employer?
You have produced a very useful site with masses of information which has definitely provided me with important aspects of the package that I need to find out.
I am due to have another conversation on Sunday (13th) so would very much appreciate it if you could provide me with a response before then.
    Thanks again

Hey man! u r providing an amazing site here, u deserve a medal for this!

Just wondering where you would recommend a british expat to live? I am single and will work in the DIFC building. I know the appartment rates are cheaper, so how much would a one bedroom or sutdio appt be say in downtown (close to difc) compared to Marina. Also when renting do rents include furniture/utilities and bills, or are they seperate?

Also how easy is it to find other expat lads to share with? I am looking to spend about 2500-4000 on rent, and hope this inlcudes utilities!

    Any advice would be invaluable!!

    thanks again.

Hi, as sales excutive in Dubai, I’ve been offered AED7000 per month + Group Medical Insurance + air ticket every 24 months. Excluding accommodation, food or transportation,

Is it a fair salary package? Can I have any saving?

What is the rent for a single room ? AED1500?

  79. RiK says:

    Hi LLya,

Thank you very much for these valuable information. My company is offering me the opportunity to work at Dubai. We are currently discussing the expat package. We are a couple with 2 kids (3 and 5 years old) living in Paris.

The current package (as a starting point for further negotiation) include the following:
    Base Salary: 34.000 AED/month
    Car allowance: 2.700 AED/month
    Relocation allowance: 34.000 AED
    Medicare covering all family
Education allowance: full payment of kids school
    Housing: 13.600 AED/month

Can you please advise me about the following questions?
1/ How much will I be able to save per month (considering that we would have some entertainment like skiing, restaurant, cinema, 4×4 tour in desert. My wife and I are smoking reasonably, and drinking sparsely)?
2/ What is the average cart cost in supermarket with imported products (French goods or brand essentially, I don’t know if there is any “Carrefour” supermarket in Dubai)?
3/ What is the current fuel cost?
4/ Can you please give an idea of average cost for a fast food menu, cheap restaurant, standard category restaurant?
5/ is it easy to obtain an “alcohol licence”?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

    Very best regards,

    Eric

    Hi Administrator,

Many Thanks for helping people like me online,

can you comment on how much saving is possible with AED 18000 pm + schooling + housing + med insurance package. We are family of 4 incl. 2 kids aged under 10 years.

Although I did not discuss with my company – does schooling cost implies IB/IGCSE curriculum or companies usually pay standard fixed compensation towards school fees.

    Cheers,
    Girish.

    Hi! Awesome info!
I have a question if i may. I have been offered a job in DXB. I hope to re-locate from the UK in a month. Salary is circa £30,000 with shared accomdation included. I would really like to re-locate with my partner and her son. We are not married (yet). She would really like to find a job but im unsure how we would achieve this. Id hate it for her to join me and then have to go home beacuse she cannot find employement. She is in her mid 20s (me, late 20s) but has no formal qualifications and spent most of her life bringing up her son with part time jobs in between… is there much avail for un un-skilled British potential ex-pat?
Its a big decision in my life, packing up and heading off…. i need to be sure

Hello there, congrats on your very informative website.

    A few questions to ask,
    1. What’s the best place to live-in if your work is in Dubai Media City (prefer cheap but a decent one) and have access to public transport? can’t drive.
2.How much is the apt. rent (1-2 bedroom)for that area?

    Thanks.

    Hi,
I am joining my husband at sharjah on residencial visa by next month. His Company is providing the accomodation and related facilities. All i want to know is
    1) how much money i need to take for my personal expense for 2 months.

    2) is it better to convert INR to AED from India itself or on reaching UAE. If in UAE, then which is the best currency exchange service there.

    2) i worked as administrator in India and guide me to the best possible ways to find a better job within 2 months.

Hey thanks very much for taking the time to put this resource together on the web. I think the name says it all: crap-free. This is such a valuable source of on-the-ground intelligence.

I have just yesterday had an offer of a potential job in Dubai and had a few questions if you don’t mind:

    1. I am in a very serious relationship with my girlfriend of three years, and there’s no way I would go to Dubai without her. However I am aware that technically it is against the law for us to cohabit, and I wondered how strictly that rule is applied there. We read stories of westerners being imprisoned for inappropriate behaviour in public so I do completely understand that the local laws and customs must be respected. But what is the unofficial view on cohabitation of unmarried people?

    2. I assume my girlfriend will have to apply for her resident’s permit as a completely separate process from my own (as we aren’t married). Is she going to have trouble obtaining one of those without a job? Because I assume she can’t refer to me as her source of income or as the reason for wanting to move there, as the authorities will not allow that (following on from 1. above).

    3. You haven’t mentioned the personal income tax rates over there in Dubai – are they pretty low?

    4. We hear alot these days about how ‘the party’s definitely over’ in Dubai. How is the local economy doing? What’s the ‘vibe’ like? Are people becoming more hostile and intolerant towards westerners now that the money’s dried up?

    5. How much do domestic servants and drivers cost (assuming I want to pay a fair wage, not the shameful slave rates you hear about)?

    Thanks very much again.

or 4250 AED and the company covers housing & transp.
is the salary good? how much will i be able to save?

  91. Mustak A says:

    Hi,
This is certainly very informative site, and to help the expats further I would suggest they explore the web pages of the most favorite local newspaper http://www.gulfnews.com
They have the best classified for used cars, properties to buy and villa/apartments/offices for lease/rent. You can always get an updated information relating to rental rates, and should relieve the admin of repetitive questions relating to housing/office. And dont forget to check out a variety of listings to get the correct idea, since the rates vary a lot. Gud Luck !

    Hello!
    This has been extremely informative.

In our case, my husband has been offered a job in Abu Dhabi. 25,000 Aed/monthly package + health insurance + annual home trip.

We (myself and our 2 year old daughter) will ideally like to join him in a couple of months and would like to get a minimum 2 bed (if not 3-bed) nice apt with pool, etc.
I believe rents in Dubai are much less than Abu Dhabi and living in Marina or JBR makes the commute for my husband doable. Please confirm if this is true.

Also is this enough of a salary given our child is montessori age and we do like an occasional night out here and there.?

A couple of months after the move, I too will try and line up a second income as I am an architect. We would hope to have that go into upgrading our lifestyle where we choose and savings. Till then we would need to live within our means on the 25k/month AED and would appreciate your feedback.

    Looking forward to your response.
    Regards,
    ANJ

  96. Ke says:

    Hi guys,

The info is quite impressive, however it seems quite limited to the subject of the expenses. I dont see any room to save.
I’m in the process of negotiating a sal between 10-15 K per month, however, after checking with a few friends there, it seems that I have quoted quite low.
Pleae bear in mind the company has not agreed to provide any housing allocawance over this.

I feel like I should be quoting a little higher, aprrox 16-19 K, and housing to be added over this.

(In respect to the job role, the pay would look decent)

In your opinion, how much would a single male, between 25-30, would require a sal?

  97. Ke says:

    Another question to the above,
Do companies normally offer a housing allowance?

    Thanks

    Hi There

Really great website which has been really helpful to me, thank you.

I’ve been offered a position 30K AED per month plus benefits, some help with relocation expenses etc, but no accommodation allowance after the first month. My husband is a car sales manager and whilst I hope he would be able to find a job, I am a little concerned because of the current job market. I would appreciate your view on how things are there at the moment and if you think it would be feasible for us enjoy the lifestyle and save a bit of cash on my salary. In terms of accommodation we would ideally like a 2 bed apartment in downtown area.
    Thanks very much.

I just wanted to thank you for taking the time and trouble to put together this site and, in particular, this living expenses calculator.

My partner and I have been negotiating our package for our move to Dubai for the last few weeks, having loved the city every time that we have visited. We have been excited about the move, but very nervous about finanicals given we will both have continued commitments in the UK.

Having used your calculator, and seen your many responses to the individual posters on this site, I have been completely reassured that we will be able to enjoy a wonderful standard of living when we move – which we were unsure about prior to visiting this website! Your insight and help is invaluable, so thank you so much!!!

    Hi Everyone,
Thank you all for your comments and questions.

Unfortunately, I cannot reply to your questions anymore because I moved to Singapore a few months ago, and I am currently busy with settling in here and out of date about what’s going on in Dubai.

I hope this site will still be helpful for the newcomers because things don’t change that much. Check out dubizzle.com for the apartment and car prices.

I am sorry if your question was left unanswered and wish you good luck in your future relocation!

    Kind regards,
